Title: Book Week - August 2010
It's Book Week at the end of August, and that makes a busy time for Mrs Echidna's Dilemma at various centres in the Brisbane region.
August 19 - Caboolture District Teacher Librarians' Writing Competition Awards afternoon at the Caboolture State School, in George Street.
Photo above: The early bird gets the [book] worm! One of the young prize winners at the Writing Competition awards headed straight to the display to purchase his own copy of Mrs Echidna's Dilemma. Children from preschoolers to year 7, from state and private schools in the Caboolture district, entered their stories in the competition. About 400 children, parents and grandparents, teachers and others, attended the awards. Betty was the guest speaker at the event.
August 24 - Deception Bay Library at 10am - these chldren were mostly under three. They enjoyed the story, and the puppet-making... Great that the parents are introducing their children to library books at such an early age!
August 25 - Sts Peter and Paul's Catholic College at Bulimba [prep, grades 1& 2]. What a day! Nearly 250 children participated in the program over four sessions throughout the day. For the older children, we spent more time talking about how the book was made, and the animal science side [life cycle of echidna and other Aussie animals].
Prize for best question came from a Grade 1 student [6 year old]: 'Is the text of your book imagination or information?' These young children can differentiate between narrative, reporting and recount genre in literature!
September 2nd - Caboolture East State School [preschoolers] It's amazing how each class is different [3 classes at this school]. We spent a bit more time talking about how the pictures were made... a sort of collage using stitching instead of glue! Like most preppies, they loved the puppets!
September 2nd - St Eugene's Catholic College in Burpengary celebrates book week with a special evening for the children and their parents at the Library. The children were encouraged to 'come in your pyjamas and have a story time'. What a great idea! I read them the story, showed them how to make the hand puppet, and then they went to another section of the library and crafted their puppet with the assistance of mum, dad, grandparents and / or siblings! Of course, the adults oohhed and aahhed over the quilts as well!
